I Received an IRS Notice — What Now?
An IRS notice is not automatically a problem — many are routine requests for information or simple corrections. The most important first step is reading it carefully to identify what it is actually asking, and responding by the date listed rather than letting it sit.
Read the notice number and reason first
Every IRS notice has a notice number (usually in the top or bottom corner) and a stated reason. That combination tells you — and us — exactly what the IRS is asking for, whether it is a math correction, a request for documentation, or something more significant.
Don’t ignore the deadline
Most notices include a response deadline. Missing it can limit your options or lead to further action, even for notices that would have been simple to resolve if addressed on time.
Do not assume it is an audit
Most notices are not audits — a large share are automated notices about a mismatch, a balance due, or a request for missing information. "Audit" specifically means the IRS is formally examining a return, which is a smaller subset of the notices people receive.
Bring the notice to us as-is
Do not respond to the IRS before understanding exactly what is being asked. Bring the full notice — every page — to your appointment so we can review it and tell you what it actually requires.
